Caring for Your Silver Jewellery

Wearing your jewellery daily is the best way to care for it: the natural, continuous friction against your skin and clothes helps prevent tarnishing. You can easily incorporate your pieces into your daily routine and even shower with them without any problem.

However, please keep a few water-related exceptions in mind:

– Swimming pools and spas: Chlorine acts as a powerful oxidising agent that can turn silver dark or coppery in just a few minutes.

– Thermal baths and natural hot springs: They contain high concentrations of sulphur, which reacts instantly with the metal, creating a deep layer of silver sulphide (black tarnish).

Silver is a precious metal that does not rust, but it can tarnish when it reacts with sulphur present in the air. If you are not going to wear your jewellery for a while, store it in an airtight zip-lock bag or in a closed, protected jewellery box away from open air.

Perfumes, cosmetics, household cleaning products, and pool chlorine can accelerate tarnishing. We recommend putting your jewellery on as the final touch when getting ready, and taking it off before exercising or cleaning.

In addition, individual skin pH levels and perspiration directly affect silver. If you notice your pieces tarnish more quickly with you, don’t worry! A gentle polish with a silver cleaning cloth from time to time will instantly restore their original shine.

We know how lazy it can be to take off our necklaces at night, but I cannot recommend doing so enough. Any wrong move can cause the chain to snap and you could lose the necklace in the bed.

Cleaning your silver jewellery

A foolproof, gentle at-home method: restore your jewellery’s original lustre through a simple chemical reaction, without wearing down or scratching the metal from excessive rubbing.

1. Prepare the bowl: Line the inside of a bowl with aluminium foil (shiny side facing up).

2. Place your jewellery: Place your pieces inside, making sure they are in direct contact with the foil.

3. Add the mixture: Dissolve 1 tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) per cup of very hot water, and pour it over the jewellery until fully submerged.

4. Let it work: Leave for 3 to 5 minutes. You will see how the silver sulphide (the dark layer) transfers directly onto the foil.

5. Rinse and dry: Rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry with a soft cloth.
